Book Release: Introducing Imam Muhammad Qasim al-Nanautwi

Compiled by ‘Abd Allah bin Muhammad al-Afriqui

From the foreword: On the outset, this compilation which is a brief background to the life and works of Hujjat al-Islam ‘Allamah al-Imam Mawlana Muahmmad Qasim al-Siddiqui al-Nanautwi was by no means meant to have been an in-depth and thorough study. Rather the aim is to introduce to the reader, some 130 years after his demise, the personality who had shaped the religious landscape of the subcontinent and which has subsequently spread to Europe, America, and Africa. He was an academic, a fighter, an ascetic, a reviver of the time.

Sayyid Mahbub Rizwi, the compiler of the 100 year history of Dar al-‘Ulum Deoband, has dedicated several pages is his work on the life of Mawlana al-Nanautwi. The was later translated into English and footnotes were added by Prof. Murtaz Husayn Qurayshi. The major portion of this introduction has been taken from Rizwi’s work. Where we felt necessary we have included further footnotes to expand on certain points, introduce the ‘ulama who have been mentioned, or to narrate anecdotes, amongst others.

The Achievement's of Sayyid Ahmad Shahid

By ‘Allamah Sayyid Abu ‘l-Hasan ‘Ali al-Nadawi
Translated by Mohiuddin Ahmad

The reformatory endeavour of Sayyid Ahmad ibn ‘Irfan Shahid al-Berelwi (1201/1786 – 1246/1831 / Allah have mercy on him) and the far-reaching effect his movement had on the subsequent development of Indian Muslims are  recognised by all, friends and foes alike. However we cite here the views of some scholars of the earlier generations about the achievements of Sayyid Ahmad Shahid.

‘Abd al-Ahad writes: “More than forty thousand Hindus and other non-Muslims embraced Islam through his efforts and three million Muslims pledged allegiance to him. His deputies (khalifa) are still enlisting people to his order and the number of all such persons would run into several millions.” (Sawanih Ahmadi, p. 65)

The Fiqh of Sadaqat al-Fitr

By Mufti Faraz Ibn Adam

The great Hanafi faqih (jurist) Imam Ibn al-Humam mentions: “Sadaqat al-Fitr is compulsory upon every free Muslim.” (Sharh Fath al-Qadir, 2:285)

The Evidence

All the scholars base their opinion on the following ahadith:

‘Abd Allah Ibn ‘Umar (Allah be pleased with him) narrates, “The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) enjoined the payment of one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of barley as Zakat al-Fitr on every Muslim slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be paid before the people went out to offer the ‘Id prayer.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 1:409)

The syllabus of the dini madaris (institutes of learning) is designed to develop in the student perfect intellectual capability. This syllabus presently operative in the dini madaris is known as the Dars Nizami. In this regard, Hakim al-Ummah Mawlana Ashraf ‘Ali al-Thanawi (Allah have mercy on him) avers:

“If an average student of average intelligence pursues the Dars Nizami course, he will develop amazing intellectual capability. No degree of any secular institution, be it Oxford, Cambridge or Harvard, can, measure up to it. “
